Everyone seems to have a bucket list of things they must see and do at least once in their life. Many of these things to do before I die lists involve travel to far off places. I know I have my bucket list and it includes horseback riding on safari in Africa, taking a horseback riding holiday in Patagonia and experiencing the tolt on an Icelandic horse; preferably while traveling in Iceland.
Luxury horseback riding holiday
Below are five luxury horseback riding holidays for your consideration. Have you ridden at any of these ranches? Where are you hoping to go for your horseback riding vacation this year?
Arizona equestrian vacation
I’ve traveled to Arizona a couple of times for horseback riding holidays and loved riding in the desert.
Several of my friends who live in Arizona have recommended Tanque Verde Ranch to me – one is comfortable on horseback, the other friend is not an equestrian. However, both ladies loved their time at the ranch and out on the trail. This says a lot about this particular luxury dude ranch – it appeals to both experienced riders and beginners. I tip my cowboy hat to any guest ranch that is able to accommodate a wide range of riding abilities.
I hope to visit Tanque Verde Ranch this year and experience this Tuscon, Arizona guest ranch for myself.
Montana luxury hideway
My Montana moment took place in Darby, Montana at Triple Creek Ranch. I had the opportunity to participate in a multi-day horseback riding vacation for women only – cowboys need not apply! If you are looking for a mother/daughter equine holiday or a girlfriend getaway for horse crazy ladies seeking luxury – head to Darby, Montana and Triple Creek Ranch.
Texas horseback riding holiday
Located a car ride away from Austin and Houston near historic Chappell Hill, Dos Brisas offers luxury lodging with a little horseback riding. This 313 acre Texas-sized ranch is all about pampering and relaxation. With the only Forbes 5 star restaurant in Texas, The Inn at Dos Brisas offers fresh produce from their organic garden and top rated wines from their cellar.
There’s more than horseback riding offered at this Relais & Chateaux resort. Relax at the infinity pool after a round of clay target shooting, tennis or fly fishing in one of two stocked ponds on property. Personally, you’ll find me in a private hacienda reading a book from the swing bed in the screened in patio. Now that’s my kind of horseback riding vacation!
Experience Texas equestrian program
Travaasa Experiential Resorts are all about…experiences. I had a chance to experience Travaasa Hana in Maui, Hawaii last year and left with a positive feeling about this resort concept. To be clear, Travaasa Resorts are not exclusively about luxury horseback riding vacations. In fact, Travaasa Austin only has five horses in the equestrian program.
I have not explored Travaasa Austin, but the company knows a thing or two about luxury holidays. I’ve heard wonderful things about health-oriented Austin, Texas and would like to check out the holistic equine program and go horseback riding in the Texas Hill Country of Balcones Canyonlands Preserve. Afterall, where else can you experience a mechanical bull riding workout class?
Wyoming working cattle ranch
Red Reflet Ranch, located in Ten Sleep, Wyoming, is both a luxury resort and a working cattle ranch. From red rimrock to rolling foothills and mountain meadows, these 27,000 acres in Wyoming’s Big Horn Mountains are best explored on horseback.
One of the unique features of this luxury ranch is the private runway and airport hanger for guests of Red Reflet Ranch. When I took my first discovery flight in 2012 I thought about how fun it would be to obtain my pilot’s license and fly my own airplane. I’m looking forward to visiting Wyoming and horseback riding at Red Reflet Ranch.
