Cody Bradford goes horseback riding with Lana’i Western Adventures
Hawaii, the land of Paniolos or Hawaiian cowboys. There is nothing like a horseback riding vacation on the Hawaiian islands; scenic vistas, the salty sea breeze, good horses and miles of riding trails. I’ve been fortunate to go horseback riding on several Hawaiian islands; the Big Island, Hana, Kauai, Maui and Oahu. This was my first time visiting and horseback riding on the island of Lana’i and I was not disappointed.
My guide, Cody Bradford, is a third generation team roper from Utah. He knows his way around horses and as a father of five, he is as comfortable taking kids out on the trail as he is swinging a lasso around a cow. I was particularly impressed with the quality of the horses at the Stables at Ko’ele.

Private horseback ride
I opted for a one hour, private horseback ride. As an experienced equestrian, I enjoy the opportunity to trot and lope on the trail whenever I have the chance. Beginning riders, or those looking for a walking only ride will want to select the one and a half hour, scenic Paniolo ride.
My horse, Sonny, is what I call a performance horse. He can work cattle, is a solid trail horse and is an agile polo pony. The sport of Polo is becoming wildly popular on the islands of Hawaii. Sonny was also one of the many horses carrying pa’u riders in the Festivals of Aloha parade in Lanai, Hawaii. He is a buckskin Quarter horse with a sunny disposition.

Stables at Ko’ele
The Stables at Ko’ele offer both English and Western riding options, thought the majority of the riders prefer Western saddles with comfortable seats and a horn to hold onto for the novice rider. Trails go through stands of iron wood trees and offer scenic views of Lanai City and the islands of Maui and Molokai.
The ranch owns about 30 horses and has a small petting zoo with a pot belly pig, goats and other small animals for the children to visit. Check the website for current pricing on horseback riding holidays.
