Zebra Migration on Africa’s Chobe River

If you are a horse lover, then you are probably a fan of the zebra, as well. Afterall, zebras trot, canter and buck just like a horse. Have you ever wanted to ride on a zebra? While I can’t arrange a ride on a zebra, imagine what it would be like to travel to Africa to watch one of the longest distance mammal migrations.

During August and September, herds of zebras migrate over the flood plains of the African wilderness, grazing on grass that grows after the water subsides. Up to two thousand zebra will pass on a migratory journey over 300 miles between August and October. Guests of Africa Albida Tourism are able to stay at Ngoma Safari Lodge and view the migration from viewing decks and terraces in Botswana, Africa.

Located in Botswana’s Chobe Forest Reserve, Ngoma Safari Lodge is a luxury eight suite property. The remote setting, at the center of one of Africa’s largest nature reserves, the Kavango–Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area, gives guests excellent game viewing opportunities, in addition to the zebra migration. You might see water buck, impala, giraffe and Chobe’s famous elephants.

Safari in Africa

While I have yet to go on safari in Africa, I’m told that you’ll spend mornings on guided safaris through the park, followed by afternoons on the terrace watching wildlife on the river plain or on a river cruise or bush picnics along the Chobe River. If you are interested in extending your Africa vacation, Victoria Falls, across the Kazungula border station, is a two and a half hour drive from Ngoma.
