People love cheering for the underdog. In this case, horse racing fans and the entire town of Yuba City, California are cheering on the race horse California Chrome and his entire team, including horse trainers Art, Alan and Steve Sherman of California-based Sherman Racing Stables and jockey Victor Espinoza. The chestnut race horse born at Harris Farms in Coalinga, California has been referred to as a push button horse and compared to a lightening fast sports car. The California Chrome race horse hasn’t been matched since the days of Secretariat or Seattle Slew.
It’s been said that I’m not a huge fan of horse racing. But California Chrome’s story is different. California Chrome is a rather small race horse, but he has a great personality and as jockey Victor Espinoza says, “I have a lot of options with California Chrome. I have a different kind of horse. I have a lot of different tools” with him.
The Belmont Stakes race is the longest horse race in the Triple Crown series at a mile and one half. That’s tough for a horse that has run and won both the Kentucky Derby with its long history of fashion and tradition and the Preakness at Pimlico Race Course.
California Chrome ran against other horses who hadn’t run in those races. The contenders in this horse race are considered more “fresh” and are certainly better rested than California Chrome. Who knows what the future holds for California Chrome – I know that he is one gorgeous horse.
Riding California Chrome
This is California Chrome’s third race in five weeks. But according to Pat Forde of Yahoo Sports, “California Chrome is like a sports car. He has great acceleration and great handling.”
