As my car left Houston Airport, paved freeways and tall buildings gave way to back country roads, wood planked front porches with chairs gently rocking in the breeze and American flags fluttering from their poles.
Driving up to the gated Inn at Dos Brisas, one can image cowboys herding cattle from as far away as Montana and Kansas to the Brazos River Valley. The Lone Star State and the Inn at Dos Brisas, in particular, offer plenty of wide open spaces.
Luxury playground for adults
This luxury playground for adults offers five deluxe haciendas, each with private plunge pool and four casitas. Instead of a horse tied up to your hacienda hitching post, you’ll find an electric golf cart waiting at the ready to whisk you around the 313 acre ranch, from farm to restaurant table.
Texas horseback riding vacation
With its Olympic-sized indoor horseback riding arena for private lessons, beginner to expert equestrians will relax in the saddle under the guidance of the Dos Brisas professional teaching staff.
Dos Brisas trail or carriage ride
Given the choice, I will always opt for a horseback riding vacation out on the trail, rather than arena riding. Nothing beats being on the back of a horse while riding on bridle paths surrounded by orchards, organic gardens and three fish-stocked ponds on the ranch.
“We have a lovely Visa a Vis Cabriolet carriage at Dos Brisas,” notes Barn Manager Val Darlington. “We drive around the property, passing the old barns, ponds and orchard. This is a very romantic experience. Snuggle up under our blankets while enjoying a glass of wine or steaming mug of hot chocolate.”
Additional ranch activities include sporting clay, tennis, organic gardening lessons, cooking or wine tasting classes, or grab some fishing poles and head to one of the lakes or settle into an Adirondack chair by the pond.

Upon arrival in my luxury hacienda, I eyed the charcuterie plate and champagne waiting for me by the mini bar. No detail is left uncovered at Dos Brisas.

Of course, I could have spent the day in the 50 gallon soaking tub in my cavernous bathroom. So many luxurious pleasures, so little time!
