What’s better than walking along the beach on California’s central coast? Readers of Writing Horseback know that my response is going to be “nothing beats horseback riding on the beach!” After learning that my Los Osos, Morro Bay horseback riding company left California, I’m pleased to share my discovery of Outback Trail Rides for beach horseback riding in Cayucos and Morro Bay.
California central coast horseback riding
You’re in good hands horseback riding with Outback Trail Rides. Owner Mick Harper has personally selected his horses for safety while still offering lively beach and trail rides on horseback. I rode Montana, a 13 year old Quarter Horse mare. This horse comes from the state of Montana, so I could understand her reticence in stepping into the Pacific Ocean. She preferred to walk and trot along the packed sand of Morro Strand State Beach.
I confess that I was concerned about getting on and off the horse at the beach due to my hip replacement. I mentioned my limitations to Mick and he cheerfully responded that he travels with a mounting block in his truck. “It’s easier on the horses back’s if riders use the mounting block,” he smiled with his lovely Australian accent.
Safe beach horse rides
All of Outback Trail Rides horses are well trained, as they should be with dogs, kites, humans and surfers to contend with on the beaches of Cayucos, California. I like the fact that Outback Trail Rides limits their beach horseback rides to four people.
Outback Trail Rides website notes the beach ride is for intermediate to advanced equestrians due to the open riding environment. Advanced riders are able to canter on the beach, while intermediate riders are safe to trot along the sandy shoreline.
Central coast horseback riding
Outback Trail Rides offers one hour beach rides in Cayucos, as well as horseback riding vacations on ranch land in Cambria and through vineyards in Paso Robles, California. What better pairing than horseback riding and wine tasting in California’s wine coast country?

It is so much fun to ride along the beach on horseback. Everyone waves at the horses and everyone is happy, including the horses!
Enjoyable times horseback riding on the beach.
thanks for the review and youtube video. We’ll be staying in Cayucos in August and are looking forward to riding on the beach!
