“We planned our entire vacation around coming here for horseback riding.” That’s what the mother of a seven year old girl told me as we prepared to hit the riding trail at the Koele Stables. This family of four had flown from California to ride Lanai’s trails.

Lanai horseback riding vacation

While this Californian family had been on a Lanai horseback riding vacation the previous year, I was testing my rusty riding skills on Lanai trails for the first time. I must admit my heart was racing those first few minutes of being on Dusty. I really shouldn’t have fretted because he was such a gentle, happy horse.

After getting over my fears, I was able to enjoy the peaceful surroundings that you can only experience on a horse. Our trail lead through a canopy of ironwood trees and fragrant Christmas Berry (Brazilian Peppertree) to an outstanding view of the neighboring islands of Molokai and Maui.

Paniolo trail ride with Koele Stables

Our small group ride on the Paniolo Trail was lead by Jesse Taylor — a real cowboy and a singing one at that! At the end of our ride, Jesse played his guitar and sang one of his original songs entitled, Ride. With Jesse’s permission, I captured a video of him singing his song. Please enjoy Jesse’s impromptu performance along with short video scenes from our ride.
