Secretariat – A Horseback Riding Vacation in Movie Theaters

Walt Disney is going to take you on one of the most thrilling horseback riding vacations of a lifetime and you won’t have to get your boots dirty! In fact, this is going to be one of the most affordable horseback riding vacations you have taken in a long time. If you are a horse lover or you have children who are equestrians,  go see Secretariat, the movie.

I’m not a huge fan of horse racing. In fact, I think horse racing is quite hard on horses, young and old alike. However, I am a horse lover, and like you, I enjoy watching movies about horses.

Triple Crown Champion – Secretariat

The movie Secretariat,  a true story staring Diane Lane and John Malkovich, is about an amazing horse who is the first U.S. triple crown champion. Secretariat won the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes horse races. Secretariat set horse racing records that still stand today in the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes.

Secretariat – The Movie

Secretariat, the movie, tells the story of Penny Chenery and her United States’ Hall of Fame racehorse, Secretariat. In 1973, Secretariat became the first horse in twenty-five years to win the United States Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing. The story centers around Penny Chenery, who took over the financially troubled Meadow Stable from her ailing father, as she guides Secretariat through his Triple Crown season. Other key characters are trainer Lucien Laurin and jockey Ron Turcotte.

Secretariat on the cover of TIME

Newsweek sports columnist Pete Axthelm, who rarely met a race track he didn’t like, described Secretariat best.

On the cover of Time magazine... Super Horse“Secretariat generates a crackling tension and excitement wherever he goes,” Axthelm wrote. “Even in the kind of gray weather that shrouds lesser animals in anonymity, Secretariat’s muscular build identifies him immediately; his glowing reddish coat is a banner of health and rippling power. Magnificent enough at rest … when he accelerates … he produces a breathtaking explosion that leaves novices and hardened horsemen alike convinced that, for one of those moments that seldom occur in any sport, they have witnessed genuine greatness.”

  1. “The Impossible True Story” cracks me up a bit. Secretariat never went off as more than a 3-1 favorite…. and that was as its FIRST race as a two year old. In the Triple Crown races he was going off as the prohibitive favorite in each race and a $2 ticket paid all of 20 cents in the Belmont. LOL.

But I’m sure it is a good movie. And a nice post – love horses and riding. Thanks for putting it up there.
